Julie Richoz
Fabric
signé is pleased to present Fabric, the first solo exhibition by Julie Richoz.
Through a collection of lamps, the designer explores the idea of a simple and elegant gesture, and an economy of means: a wooden base and three rods supporting a fabric drape that conceals a lightbulb.
Crafted in her Parisian studio, some lamps are unique pieces, while others, when the material available allows it, may be reproduced. Conducting research into material combinations and creating her own hand-stained plywood, she harmonizes colors and finishes in unique associations between bases, fabrics, and stems.
This artisanal exploration, as an alternative to high-tech techniques or technological perfection, reflects a shift towards a more intimate scale. A new production method for the designer, accustomed to collaborating with editors (Vitra, Hay, Mattiazzi…), each solution is made possible through the context of the studio, revealed by a form of “intuition in action.”
Fascinated by the potential of fabrics, Julie Richoz plays with the concept of "sampling," mixing and associating materials with various connotations, sometimes freeing them from their original meanings and symbolism, to allow for a new interpretation.
The drape, central element of the exhibition, suggests the idea of embracing a form that cannot be completely controlled, fluid and unfixed. A drape as if placed in a moment of grace, suspended, delicately swaying with the passage of a breeze or a presence.
About Julie Richoz :
Swiss-French designer Julie Richoz (born 1990) set up her eponymous design studio in Paris in 2015, through which she enjoys exploring with curiosity and sensibility the development of her own language through objects.
From unique pieces to industrial scale, she sees a continuity rather than a difference between the two ways of production. In both cases, she is fascinated by the savoir- faire and the passion and precision in handling materials.
Her practice ranges from objects, furniture, and lighting to textiles, for companies such as Alessi, Louis Poulsen, Hay, Mattiazzi, La Manufacture de Cogolin, Galerie kreo, among others.
After graduating from ECAL University of Art and Design Lausanne (2012), she worked for Pierre Charpin as a projectassistant (2013-2015). She was a designer-in-residence at CIRVA Research Center on Art and Glass, France (2013), atSèvres - Cité de la Céramique, France (2013), and at Casa Wabi, Mexico (2017). She has been awarded the Grand Prix at Design Parade (2012), Swiss Design Awards (2015/2019), Bourse Leenaards (2016) and the Grand Prix de la Création de la ville de Paris (2023).
Since 2017, Richoz has taught industrial design at ECAL University of Art and Design Lausanne, Switzerland.
